Landsdowne in 2013
Patrick Walker was obviously pleased with racing in 2012 and asked me if I would like compete in further rounds of the Landsdowne in 2013.
The result was that I rode his Norton at Oulton Park, Donington Park and Brands Hatch GP circuit. All circuits that I last raced on 31 years ago!
Apart from a DNF in the 1st race at Oulton when an engine bolt came loose I finished all the race I started in and had some quite good results.
There were 4 riders who were consistently faster than me all year.
Three of them, Mike Russell, Duncan Fitchett and Glen English have all won the Landsdowne championship at some time or other and the 4th rider, Alex Sinclair is a youngster who rides his GB Access Norton very well and will probably win the championship eventually.
Mike Russell was champion both 2012 & 2013 on his Richard Adams Manx which is also powered by one of Patricks engines
Unfortunately, at Brands Hatch there was a very serious accident during practice resulting in the death of German rider Karl-Heinz Kalbfell. It was one of those rare, freak accidents that should have only caused minor injury and it left the whole race paddock completely stunned.
As a result it was decided that we would just run one race of the Landsdowne instead of the scheduled 4 and that race was not for championship points.
It was in this race where I had my best result finishing 3rd behind Mike Russell and Duncan but I probably would have been in my customary 5th position had Glenn and Alex been there. They were both over on the Isle of Man at the MGP.
The Landsdowne is a great series and we have a good time socially as well as on the track.
I suppose that along with Patrick , the other person that has been instrumental in my racing comeback is my former Honda Endurance team mate, Stan Woods.
Stan and I have ridden together as a team on his Norton at the Goodwood revival both in 2011 and last year where we finished, in my opinion a very creditable 5th overall. It was Stan that suggested on numerous occasions that I should ride in the Landsdowne.
In fact it was Stan that first asked Patrick to let me ride his bike !
