Broadford, Australia 2012

I was invited to go to Australia to take part in the Honda Broadford Bonanza over the Easter period. Whilst in Aus, we were guests of my good friend Barry Smith and his wife Norma. Barry was the last rider to win the 50cc TT (on a works Derbi) He also was twice Formula 3 World Champion.

Another good friend of mine is the journalist, Alan Cathcart. This picture shows Alan and I together at Broadford.

A mutual friend of ours is another journalist, Jim Scaysbrook. Jim was co-rider with the late-great Mike Hailwood in long distance events in Australia and New Zealand. He is currently editor of Australia Classic Bike.

“Beakie” is the owner and builder of this lovely Honda and he very graciously let me ride it during the weekend

There have always been characters in Bike racing, and here is one of them! I had’t seen Victor Soussan for many years – but he turned up at Broadford – it was great to see him again.

One of the highlights of my trip down under was to get to ride the Irving Vincents. These superb machines are manufactured by brothers Ken and Barry Horner. they are a bit different than the Vincent I regularly ride at Goodwood. Whilst the Goodwood Vincent produces around 60 BHP, these Monsters have up to 165BHP at the back wheel! In the final picture I receive some last minute instructions from Barry before taking to the track for the first time with Alan Cathcart for a photo shoot.
